In May, Places for People submitted an outline application for the exciting 8,500-home for their part of the Gilston area in East Hertfordshire (3/19/1045/OUT). The application is currently being reviewed and considered by the Council and stakeholders.
A further two full applications were submitted to East Herts and Harlow District Councils. One application aims to provide additional sustainable transport capacity on the existing bridge across the River Stort crossing (3/19/1051/FUL), including dedicated bus lanes and to deliver new routes for walking and cycling. The second application is for a new bridge across the river to the East of the existing crossing (3/19/1046/FUL), to provide new access.
An outline planning application for a further 1,500 homes on the Briggens estate (directly to the south-west of the land owned by Places for People) was submitted in November 2019. Together with the outline application for 8,500 homes, these areas will make up the Gilston Area villages within Harlow and Gilston Garden Town.
The outline application stage is high level. It covers details relating to access, the area for the new villages and broad location of the village centres, but does not include details of exactly how many homes will be built in each village, where the schools will be or what types of housing will be built. This detail will start to be developed as part of the master planning process for each of the villages, which will then inform the reserved matters planning applications for each of the villages.
Linda Haysey, East Herts Council leader said: “There is so much potential for the Garden Town, not just the additional much needed homes, but with major investment in infrastructure, sustainable transport, employment areas, green spaces and more, we are creating communities for the future.”
