The Next Generation

Representing the Garden Town Board at the recent Community Celebration Day in Harlow’s Harvey Centre was Cllr Stephen Boulton of Hertfordshire County Council.

“It’s fantastic to be at events like this and speaking to people about what’s going to happen in the future,” said Cllr Boulton who is an Executive Member for Sustainable Economic Growth at Hertfordshire.

“Everything a council does touches people’s lives so its important that we run events like this, listen to the aspirations of people and see if we can help them.”

Earlier this year saw East Herts Council agree to approve 10,000 Garden Town homes in Gilston, continuing the area’s affiliation with Garden communities.

“Hertfordshire has a long history with the Garden movement, both Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City are in the county and they were both brought forward over 100 years ago by Ebenezer Howard, one of the country’s great urban planners, who was brilliant at bringing people together and making things happen.

“And now it’s important that we build for the next generation, we’re a growing country of 69m people and our children and grandchildren will need places to live with good quality housing.”

And looking ahead to Harlow & Gilston Garden Town, Cllr Boulton commented: “Not only will there be new housing but improvements to the town centre, business opportunities and more walking and cycling routes that will improve health and help reduce car use for local journeys.”
