Congratulations go to Fawbert & Barnard Primary School in Old Harlow who are the winners of the Garden Town’s 2021 Big Pedal challenge trophy.
Organised by active travel charity Sustrans, Big Pedal is a nationwide competition that encourages children to walk, cycle and walk to school every day over a two week period.
Over 700,000 children took part across the country with nine schools signed up from the Harlow area.
Not only did Fawbert & Barnard’s record the most active travel journeys in Harlow but they made Big Pedal’s top 50 list for primary schools in the UK.
And the Harlow & Gilston Garden Town team’s Naisha Polaine and David Burt celebrated the school’s success by presenting the trophy and a pair of scooter prizes to Fawbert and Barnard pupils.
Deputy Head for the school, Arnold Worton-Geer, said: “Remote learning was very difficult for everyone so we wanted to ensure the children were active when they were back here and then the Big Pedal challenge came along.
“Our school council were keen to promote fitness in their classroom meetings and we’re a very local school anyway so families walking, scootering and cycling to and from the gates is always encouraged.
“All the children, from Reception to Year 6, have worked really hard on taking part in the Big Pedal so it’s great that we can put the Garden Town trophy in our cabinet alongside some of our other school sporting accomplishments.
“It’s great to win a trophy but taking part, getting involved with new things and keeping active is just as important for the children.”
A big well done goes to all the Harlow schools that took part especially St Alban’s Academy who were Big Pedal runners up locally and Passmores who finished third.
