Harlow is set to secure over £2m as part of Sport England’s investment into tackling physical inactivity and fostering resilient communities.
In a landmark move set to reshape the health and wellbeing landscape across the county, Harlow is amongst several Essex areas that will receive a significant portion of Sport England’s £9.8 million funding pot.
It means local Harlow projects like Essex Pedal Power, designed to improve access to cycling and active travel in areas of greatest need, can continue long-term, improving the day-to-day quality of life for residents.
Councillor Danielle Brown, Harlow’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Culture and Community, hailed the announcement as “a fantastic win for Harlow this summer,” confirming that the town will receive nearly £1 million in direct funding, bolstered by match contributions from stakeholders such as Harlow Council and Harlow & Gilston Garden Town, to exceed £2 million in total.
Castle Point, Thurrock, Basildon, Colchester and Tendring are the other Essex areas receiving Sport England investment.
The current Essex Pedal Power project in Harlow was launched last December by Active Essex with an aim of delivering 200 bikes to eligible residents, allowing more people to experience the many benefits of cycling, improved physical and mental health plus access to training, employment and education opportunities.
Speaking about the £2m funding boost that will allow Essex Pedal Power to grow even further, Cllr Brown said: “This is a pivotal moment for our town and it represents a major step forward in our plan for Building Harlow’s Future.
“The investment will be instrumental in improving access to active travel, movement, and physical activity across our community.
“It is an exciting time for Harlow and I want to thank our dedicated council officers and partners whose tireless work has made this possible.
“Together, we are building a healthier, more active future for all.”
