Pedal Power giveaway in Harlow, family on four bikes

150 Free Bike Milestone for Pedal Power Harlow

Essex Pedal Power has given out over 150 free bikes to adults and children across Harlow since launching in the town at the end of last year.

Helping eligible residents stay better connected to employment, education and community services, a further 37 bikes found new homes in the final giveaway of 2025 recently.

The pre-Christmas collection for local residents was made possible thanks to Rainbow Services, Essex Pedal Power and Bikeability plus local partners including Harlow & Gilston Garden Town, Harlow Council and Active Essex.

Laura, one of the residents who collected a new bike, said: “I’ve been wanting to cycle more for ages, especially to and from work, but the cost of buying a bike had been holding me back.

“Receiving this bike today has been fantastic so thank you Essex Pedal Power.”

A previous bike recipient also returned to the event for some essential bike maintenance and said: “As a full-time carer, I was finding it hard to get regular exercise.

“My Pedal Power bike has helped me stay active as I use it to travel around town and run errands – I’ve even lost 7kg since using it.

“It’s also saved me money as I no longer have to rely on taxis.”

Kelly Tarling, Essex Pedal Power Project Lead at Rainbow Services, added: “By removing barriers to cycling, we’re enabling more people to take part in physical activity they may not otherwise have been able to access.”

Funded by Sport England with a top up from Harlow & Gilston Garden Town, Essex Pedal Power was launched by Rainbow Services in Harlow last December with an aim to provide 200 free, high-quality bikes to local residents, along with helmets, locks, pumps and lights.

Since the wider programme began in 2021, more than 4,000 free bikes have been given out across Basildon, Canvey Island, Clacton and Jaywick Sands, Colchester, Harwich and Dovercourt, and now Harlow. Alongside free bikes, the programme offers training, group rides, volunteering opportunities, and ongoing support to help residents build confidence, connect with others and take advantage of Harlow’s extensive cycle network.

Essex Pedal Power aims to reduce financial barriers that prevent people from owning a bike, making cycling a realistic, accessible and sustainable mode of travel for all.
