The first phase of Harlow & Gilston Garden Town’s new travel infrastructure has been shortlisted for yet another award.
Having already made the finals at both the National Transport Awards and ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) East of England, the Garden Town’s dedicated route for active and sustainable travel features in the Partnership of the Year category at this year’s Essex Housing Awards.
Completed in March and funded by Homes England, the project, delivered by Essex Highways, Jacobs and Essex County Council, with Hertfordshire County Council serving as the accountable body, features enhanced routes for walking, cycling and bus travel.
The route between Harlow Town Station and the Town Centre, known as a Sustainable Transport Corridor, marks the first completed stage of a wider programme of transport improvements across the Garden Town.
Designed to make walking, cycling and bus travel easier, the scheme creates stronger connections between key destinations while helping prepare the area for future growth. It also lays the foundations for the next stage of infrastructure delivery, with work already underway around Eastwick Roundabout and the Central Stort Crossing North project.
Talking about the Partnership of the Year category, Paul Edwards from the Essex Housing Awards said: “No single organisation can meet the challenge of the growing need for housing by working alone.
“Effective partnerships bring together land, funding, expertise and local knowledge, enabling projects to be delivered faster, at greater scale and with better outcomes for residents.”
