Stansted Expansion Signals More Investment

Harlow is set to benefit from yet another billion pound investment into the local area.

With HGGT having already identified a £1.3 billion investment into new and improved infrastructure as part of the Garden Town development, Government has announced a £1.1 billion expansion of London Stansted Airport.

More than 5,000 jobs will be created as a result of the five year London Stansted investment and aligns with Harlow & Gilston Garden Town’s aspirations of 1000 new jobs a year across the next two decades.

The funding will expand the existing London Stansted terminal by a third and will secure new air routes to key business and holiday destinations while boosting local supply chains.

Gareth Powell, London Stansted’s Managing Director, said: Our aim is to be the airport of choice for even more passengers and we’re confident our investment plans will boost our competitiveness within the London aviation market, as well as supporting economic growth, jobs and vital international connectivity for London and the East of England.”

Harlow Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Councillor Michael Hardware, says that the investment is great news for Harlow businesses and residents.

“Stansted Airport is on Harlow’s doorstep and we will work hard to ensure that our town benefits from this investment.

“Not only will residents benefit from new air routes to new destinations but there will be new jobs on offer and opportunities for local businesses to supply the airport.

“People who work at the airport get discounted public transport travel which makes it a great option for Harlow residents.

“With Harlow being so close to the airport that also attracts businesses who want to relocate to the town so more investment in the airport is all in all very good news for Harlow.

“As part of our mission to secure investment into Harlow’s future we will actively work with the owners to be a part of the exciting new chapter for the airport.”

Harlow Council work closely with the airport to promote career opportunities and there is a jobs fair coming up this month on 23 October.
